Stags are coming home

flight home - stags coming home

Recent years have seen the rise and rise of the European stag weekend. The lure of cheap flights, cheap beer and cheap thrills have made this an attractive option for some. This year however has seen the appeal of this trend start to wane. The reasons for this are many and varied but the result is the same; more stag groups are staying in the UK.

The idea that if you going to cut loose for a weekend that you do this as far way from home certainly has its merits. Or at least you feel a bit safer that you’re not going to run into a colleague or family member in a difficult late night situation when you are not at your most coherent. Not so the case for one traveler who found himself attempting to make small talk with his boss and his wife who had been unfortunate enough to run into his colleague and 14 friends as they enjoyed (loudly) some local hospitality.

This is an isolated example of the pitfalls of foreign weekends, dominated by brutal policing, opportunist locals and littered with lost passports and missed flights. The more pressing reality is that for some the principle consideration of ‘value for money’ has in recent times evaporated.

The impact is two fold. The pound is on its knees and spending power has taken a hit whilst the need for thrift has become more and more pressing as the threat of redundancy looms large for some. Many are being constantly reminded by their nearest and dearest that a stag weekend abroad is not a financial priority when the mortgage is in arrears. This in turn has lead to falling group sizes as people are reluctantly forced to drop out. Rather than an event without key people the simple solution is to stay in the UK.

A further cause for hesitation when looking overseas for fun is the myth of the cheap flight. The reality is that any group booking on the same weekend flight at the same time would not all benefit from the attention grabbing headline rates of the low cost airlines. This coupled with the increase in aviation fuel prices and reductions in passenger numbers has meant that ticket prices have in turn risen. Factor in spending money and accommodation and even if you save £20 on a cheap hotel you will be lucky to get away with £400 for the overseas stag experience.

Then there is the journey. Outbound is fun. Meeting up for another adventure with old friends is something to relish; waking up a thousand miles from home on a Sunday morning with nothing but aching kidneys and a frosty reception at home to look forward to is less appealing.

Lets face it, what do they have over there that we now can’t do better over here now that prices are similar. The answer is becoming clear as the numbers of people enjoying the hospitality at home continues to thrive whilst going abroad, although not without its merits, becomes a much harder case to argue.
