Okay; so you’ve got the job…you’ve been passed the poison chalice of responsibility for organising the stag do. What now?!
Well, first things first you need to choose a destination and so much can rest on this. It is not as simple as just sticking a pin in the map somewhere near your own house, there are a few key factors that are worth a few moments consideration.
A location needs to allow ease of access for as many people as possible. The best flight prices for Riga may be available from Stansted but if everyone is coming from Glasgow it’s worth the extra £20 to use a local airport. This is rather obvious example but it is remarkable how often the stag weekend planning process does not hold up well to scrutiny. I have myself been flown to Girona arriving at 1am for a stag weekend in Barcelona an hour and a half away. Not a great start to the weekend.
As a small island we are fortunate enough in this country to never be far away from a beach or seaside resort. These locations can often feature high up the wish list for Stag and Hen weekends but their pitfalls are many. The seaside can be a wonderful experience but it can also be grim. Utopian memories of family visits to sandy golden beaches drenched in summer sun can be a distraction. Blackpool in February is not like this. Even if you are lucky enough to hit upon a weekend when it is not raining, the beach in high season is not for the faint hearted. You will firstly have to cope with your own physical condition, self inflicted from the night before. Constant fear of dehydration and bright light does not make the beach a good venue to try and stage a recovery. Notwithstanding you own condition the English beach is an exhibition of the worst elements of society from the behaviour of local youths to the scale of nudity on display from people who should know better. Back to more practical considerations you will find that the biggest obstacle will be the quest for suitable accommodation.
For 3 months of the year seaside hotel owners have to earn enough to keep them in business all year. Value for money is not high on their list of priorities. It is very much a case of market forces as the whole country heads for the beach. A good tour operator will help to mitigate against this but compared to the alternatives available in the big cities the outlook is bleak.
So consider: overpriced hotels and nightclubs full of 16 year old girls escaping their parents on the family holiday… or the affordability and choice of the big cities for less money. It’s a close run thing but I suspect the beach will still be full again this year.
