Record Setting Weddings...

Last week a California couple hit the headlines for getting hitched…but this wasn’t any normal wedding: the marriage took place on the Groom’s 100th birthday meaning the couple, the Bride being 90 years old herself, are on track to becoming the oldest couple to marry.

As you can imagine the media attention was phenomenal and the couple even received a congratulatory card from President Obama as well as a birthday card for the Groom!

The couple, who have both been married before and lost spouses in death, have been courting since the early 1980s. The Bride, Rose, had no intentions of remarrying and joked that she would marry the Groom, Forrest, on his 100th birthday. As the years went on it became more apparent that Rose would be kept to her word, and this year they became Mr and Mrs.

In the spirit of record setting weddings, we take a look at weddings that have earned a Guinness World Record title…

Have Your Cake and Eat it...

In 2004, chefs in an US hotel set the record for the largest wedding cake. The cake weighed in at a whopping 6.818 tonnes (15,032 lb).

The Sweet Smell of Flowers...

The world’s largest wedding bouquet measured 60.09 m (197 ft 1 in) long and was made using 1,500 flowers. Hay fever sufferers beware!

It’s All About Who You Know...

The record for the most wedding guests goes to a couple who had over 150,000 people witness their wedding in 1995. The cost per head must have been huge!

A Slice of Cake

The most expensive wedding cake slice was sold at Sotheby’s, New York, for £18,163 ($29,900) in 1998. The slice was from the wedding cake of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s who married in 1937.

It’s All in the Genes

The most generations to celebrate a golden wedding anniversary (over 50 years) currently stands at five generations. Keep up if you can:

Generation #1: Philipp Jakob Kober (b.16 June 1776) married Maria Barbara Ullrich (b. 1 February 1775) in Germany. Their marriage lasted 53 years and came to an end when Maria Barbara Kober, nee Ullrich died.

Generation #2: Susan Kober (b. 21 August 1810), daughter of the above, married Johannes Machenheimer, Jr. (b. 8 September 1811) on 21 January 1836 in Germany. Their marriage lasted 62 years and came to an end when Susan Machenheimer, nee Kober died on 27 August 1898.

Generation #3: J. Elizabeth Machenheimer (b. 9 April 1846) daughter of the above (generation 2), married George Christopher Nestle (b. 25 February 1837) on 7 November 1863, in the USA. Their marriage lasted 54 years and came to an end when George Christopher Nestle died on 30 March 1918.

Generation #4: Ernestine Amalia Nestle (b. 22 June 1877), daughter of the above (generation 3), married James C. Curran (b. 8 September 1871) on 1 June 1898, St. Louis City, Missouri, USA. Their marriage lasted 52 years and came to an end when James C. Curran died on 19 March 1951.

Generation #5 (two couples): a) Elizabeth Ruth Curran (b. 18 June 1915) daughter of the above (generation 4), married Edward Louis Heim, Sr. (b. 21 July 1914) on 1 June 1938, St. Louis City, Missouri, USA. Their marriage lasted 50 years and came to an end when Elizabeth Ruth Heim died on 13 April 1989. b) Doris Ann Curran (b. 8 August 1921) daughter of the above (generation 4), married Russell Eugene Callahan (b. 27 March 1920) on 1 June 1943, St. Louis City, Missouri, USA. The couple is still married as of 02 April 2003, having been married 59 years, 10 months.

That’s certainly a mouth full!
