Bath and Bristol’s Retail Heavens…

Bath and Bristol have both recently opened world class city centre shopping centres. For visiting hen and stag groups these now offer a whole day of sport as part of a great weekend away with friends. The West Country now really stands out as the destination of choice for the discerning shopper.

Southgate Centre, Bath.

Southgate Shopping - Bath

The long awaited regeneration of Bath's Southgate is now open, creating a vibrant mix of shops, restaurants, leisure facilities and homes, all served by a modern public transport hub and set within a new pattern of streets and public spaces in the heart of the world heritage city. High street chemist Boots, clothes stores, Azendi, Calvin Klein, Kurt Geiger, New Look, H&M and Quicksilver are all here. A short walk away is the recently opened Bath Spa complex for some well earned relaxation for afterwards.

Elsewhere in the city Bath boasts more independently owned shops per head of population than most other cities in the UK. The high proportion of small, family-run shops means that the shopping experience in Bath is different from that offered by towns where big chains are dominant. It is the sheer variety and quality of shopping on offer that acts as a magnet to this historic town.

Of course, the high street chains are present in Bath as well, particularly around Stall Street, Union Street and Milsom Street. Walcot Street has been the artisans' centre of Bath since Roman days, and here a true Bath jewel can be found, the Bath Aqua Theatre of Glass (1-2 Orange Grove) where glass is hand blown.

The Fine Cheese Co (29-31 Walcot Street) is another attraction, with a vast selection of delicious cheeses for sale. You can watch fresh chocolates being hand-crafted in The House of Minerva chocolate shop (14 Cheap Street) and be sure to try their divine hot chocolate. Also on Cheap Street, December 25th is a quirky year-round Christmas shop with sidelines in Easter and Valentines goods.

The latest arrival on Bath's shopping scene is Milsom Place; top-end shops such as Cath Kidson and Ted Baker can be found here, and the accompanying bars and restaurants aren't half bad either.

Bath Flea Market also takes place on Walcot Street, every Saturday, while Bath Farmers Market is held on the same day at Green Park Station. A wide variety of local produce, all from within 40 miles of Bath, is sold by the producers themselves.

Pulteney Bridge is only one of two bridges in Europe that are lined with shops (Ponte Vecchio in Florence being its more famous cousin). There are several small specialist shops and a good variety of restaurants serving Italian, Thai, Indian and French cuisine in nearby streets.

Cabot Circus, Bristol.

Cabots Circus - Bristol

New to Bristol last year, Cabot Circus' innovative design, striking architecture and fashion-led mix of stores are set to put Bristol in the top ten on the UK's retail ladder.

The central area's breathtaking and elegant glass shell-shaped roof, creates a light, airy, open environment and is a unique feature of the lively centre. The restored Dominican friary buildings feature shops, restaurants and apartments, making the new Quakers Friars the focal point of the vibrant and cosmopolitan public square. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art car park provides a direct link, via a curved pedestrian bridge, for shoppers without encountering a single vehicle.

As you would expect from a shopping complex on this scale all the big brands are here but there are also many smaller independent boutiques.

Harvey Nichols and House of Fraser have both taken flagship stores in the development. Cabot Circus also features:

Although Cabot Circus is one of Bristol’s prime shopping centre, the city also offers a great variety of shopping locations with a high share of independent retailers and a vibrant range of street markets and tourism events.

Well known concentrations of Bristol's small and independent retailers are to be found in locations such as: Christmas Steps, Clifton Village, Gloucester Road, Church Road, Old Market, Stokes Croft, Stapleton Road/St. Marks Road and The Mall at Cribbs Causeway.

Both Bath and Bristol offer a multitude of shopping experiences for visiting hen and stag parties and both couple a great days shopping with an amazing night out! Contact us for hen and stag dos in Bath and Bristol…
