Valentine’s Survival Guide for Men...

Yep, the dreaded day is nearly upon us again – 14th February; St Valentine’s Day. Get this day right and you can earn some extra brownie points; get it wrong and you will be in the dog house for the foreseeable future!

However, if the sight of red hearts hanging from the ceiling, or a bed filled with rose petals makes you squirm, then why not try some of the ideas we have listed below: tried and tested to make your better half smile with delight without making you want to run for the bathroom to be sick!

Flowers

Women love flowers so they are a good starting point for a Valentine’s Day present (unless of course your lady suffers from really bad hayfever!). However, this simple gift can go wrong if not thought out properly. Buying flowers is one of those times that you really need to know your woman: What is her favourite flower? Or should you play it safe and go for roses? Would she want red, pink, or yellow roses? Does she even like roses at all?

Order flowers in advance. This is probably the busiest period in a florist’s calendar, so a quick call in the day isn’t likely to give you the best result: think ahead.

Organise a delivery. It might cost a little extra, so bear that in mind when establishing your Valentine’s budget, but a delivery to your girl’s place of work could make all the difference. Don’t be a cheapskate. Valentine’s is the perfect time for florists to implement a little inflation on prices. Don’t expect to just run into Tesco and pick up some discounted chrysanthemums: accepting that that’s the way it is, making the effort and spending that little bit extra will be worth it in the end.

Balloon In A Box

This cute gift does exactly what it says on the tin: only take this option if you know your partner will not jump out of their skin at the sight of a balloon emerging from a box, otherwise it might have the adverse effect.

Most balloon specialists now offer this service, which allows you to chose a balloon, write a heartfelt message, box it all up and send it to your loved one. It’s that simple. If you want to add that extra touch, you can often choose a small gift to accompany the balloon too.

Just think of the grin on your partner’s face when they open the box and a balloon floats out. Magic!

Chocolates

What woman doesn’t love a box of choccies? Chocolates really are the quintessential gift for Valentine’s Day. And with so much to choose from, no one will begrudge you doing some market research either.

And if your lady is watching the calories, score bonus points by opting for dark chocolate as it has less calories than milk.

Jewellery

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, after all. Or pearls. Or rubies. Or any other precious stone. If you are looking to wow her this Valentine’s Day then jewellery is always a safe bet. Opting for a birthstone is always a good choice, and likely to give you points for being attentive, but if you take this option or not, jewellery buying is all about how much your know the recipient: so do research. There’s no point getting her gold if she only wears silver; or no point getting her an emerald if her birthstone is sapphire. A quick root around her jewellery box will definitely help the cause. Provided you don’t get caught.

A Weekend Away

A romantic (or dirty) weekend away could be just the ticket for adding something special to your Valentine’s weekend. There are loads of romantic places in the UK which are perfect for that weekend getaway, but leaving it this late to book up could prove both pricey and limit your options. Thankfully though, most romantic destinations will be jumping on to the Valentine’s bandwagon, meaning there’ll be lots to do once you get there. Or perhaps you could find a secluded location away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life for some serious alone time.

Proposal

Hold tight. If you’ve decided that this is the woman of your dreams, what better way to show her than to propose on Valentine’s Day? While some might argue it’s a clichéd sentiment, it is so for a reason: what women wouldn’t love to be proposed to on the most romantic day of the year? So, get practising getting down on bended knee...

And, if she says yes, you can start planning your stag do – and we have some handy tips on that front to help you out!
