The Origins of the Stag Do...

Stag Dos – a last night of freedom for many men about to get married and the perfect reason to have a knees-up with the lads! But where did the tradition of having a stag do start and how does it differ from country to country?

Stag dos around the world do tend to be rather similar, even in light of the different cultures. It would seem that worldwide, men want to celebrate their final night of freedom with their closest mates getting drunk and participating in wild activities…no surprise there then!

We take a look at a few countries and how they celebrate…

Australia

Australian Flag: Bucks Night

Known as a Buck’s Night in Australia, those down under have a similar style of celebrating to the Brits: the Buck’s friends arrange an evening of heavy drinking, humiliating activities and may hire strippers.

France

France Flag: Stag Do

Called the "enterrement de vie de garçon" which translates to “(the) burial of the life as a boy or bachelor”, those in France also celebrate with drinking, slightly less humiliating activities and dressing up and may also hire strippers.

Denmark

Denmark Flag: Polterabend

Polterabend, as it is known in Denmark, involves a group of friends meeting for breakfast followed by a day of activities (such as paintballing, go-karting etc) then ending with a night on the town. As with some stag dos in the UK, the groom may not be aware what day the Polterabend will take place or what they are doing.

South Africa

South Africa Flag: Bull Party

In South Africa, the stag do is referred to as a Bull’s Party and involves an entire day of fun and embarrassing activities. Typically speaking, as in the UK, the best man arranges the stag do but all activities are top secret – the groom only finds out on the day!

It would seem that the Royals enjoy the idea of having a stag do in South Africa with rumours that Prince William will be arranging one of his stag dos there…

United Kingdom

United Kingdom Flag: Stag Do

Stag dos in the UK tend to run over a weekend and involve a number of activities, much the same as in other countries. The groom may be dressed up, embarrassed through practical jokes and will almost always get completely drunk.

The Origins of Stag Dos

There is not a clear cut history on the origins of the stag do but the idea of celebrating your last night of freedom seems to go way back. There is evidence that even as early as the fifth century, men were having stag dos. In Sparta military comrades would hold a bachelor dinner and spend the evening feasting and toasting to a friend on the eve of his wedding.

Cernunnos, Celtic God

There are also correlations between the Celtic god Cernunnos and the stag do. Cernunnos is often depicted as a horned or antlered man (usually the antlers of a stag) and is associated with herds of animals…anyone else see the correlations?!

Interestingly, he is also known as the god of nature and fertility…

So, now you know a little more about the origins of the stag do and how different countries celebrate it. All you have to decide now is where you are having your stag do and what activities you will choose…and of course, we are always here to help you arrange the perfect stag do!
