Best Man Duties...
The most honourable duty at a wedding and historically chosen for being strong and a good fighter, the Best Man has a number of wedding duties to fulfill. How much, or little, the Best Man has to do depends on the Groom’s preferences - some Grooms like to be ‘hands on’, whilst others prefer to share the load.
Before the Wedding
Act as a soundboard for any ideas the Groom has about the wedding
Help the Groom choose the Ushers and make sure they are aware of their responsibilities
Help the Groom choose and buy all suits for the wedding, plus collect them from the shop if the Groom is unable to himself
Prepare the Best Mans speech
Arrange the stag do and make sure it runs without issues
On the Wedding Day
Make sure everything is packed and ready to go on the day
Support the Groom on the day of the wedding, doing tasks that need doing and steadying his nerves
Help the Groom get ready before the ceremony
Check the Groom has everything he needs for his honeymoon (if they are leaving straight after the ceremony) including passports, luggage and tickets
Travel with the Groom to the wedding venue, making sure he arrives before the Bride
Locate the buttonholes for the Groom, Ushers and yourself and fit them securely
Ensure all service sheets and documents have been displayed at the venue
Check that any technology has been set up on time and safely
Pay the church fees on behalf of the Groom
Hand over the rings at the required moment
Watch the signing of the register / sign the register as a witness if asked by the Groom
Deal with any small issues that may occur during the day
Make sure guests have directions for the reception venue
Help photographer locate people for pictures
Greet guests and seat them as they arrive at the reception venue
After the event, collect any suits or rental items that need returning
Usher Duties...
Ushers help out the Best Man and ensure the event runs smoothly. The Bride and Groom can choose as many Ushers as they want, however there are at least two traditionally.
Before the Wedding
Attend suit fittings
Help the Best Man with any stag do preparations
Help the Best Man with any wedding day preparations
On the Wedding Day
Ensure all other Ushers at the venue early (at least half an hour before the wedding is due to start)
Help guests find parking spaces
Help guests find their seats at the venue and deal with any seating issues
Direct guests to the correct room at the venue
Escort the Groom’s parents to their seats and the Bride’s mother (especially if she has no other male escort)
During the service, one Usher should remain near the entrance in case of late arrivals / people who need to leave for some reason during the service
Be able to help the Best Man if required
Be a point of contact if any issues occur during the day
